Review of Viridiana (1962) by Brian R — 04 Feb 2013
A film which charts the journey of a nun called Viridiana from being devoted to God and about to take her final vows, to living (in a "fromage a trois?") with her cousin and his servant. I haven't seen a bad Buñuel film yet.
This one is less surreal than some of his other works such as 'The Discreet Charm..." but perhaps it has more of a story to tell and Buñuel didn't want there to be many visual or tonal distractions from it.
He extracts a fine performance from Fernando Rey - surely the greatest actor of all when it comes to conveying evil simmering below the surface - and an even better one from the incandescently beautiful Silvia Pinal.
