Review of Viridiana (1962) by Kasun S — 06 Oct 2014

Luis Buñuel's Viridiana is based on a novel titled "Halma" by Benito Pérez Goldós. It's worth to mention that, Unlike his later movies, Viridiana is less surrealistic and complex. Yet it has managed to win the Palme d'Or at the 1961 Cannes proving how artistic and powerful this movie is. Well, as I said it is less surrealistic, but the point is Luis Buñuel doesn't even give you at least a single chance to predict what is going to happen next or the entire story.

May be you will find the ending ambiguous in this one too because of the symbolic elements he has used to present the story. But I know that Buñuel's fans won't see a problem there.

When the movie starts it seems like okay, there is nothing unconventional ,just presenting a story about a naïve young woman who goes to visit her uncle. When she gets there , This movie converts its pace and making the story a thrilling one. The movie does that changing pace continuously while the story goes straight. That describes how masterful Buñuel is at story telling.I think, Under the story we see,there should be another meaning Buñuel tries to tell. It demonstrates that humans can be really evil and how it conducts the good to be changed. I saw that people have emphasized this as an indictment of religion. From the way I see this ,This is an indictment of human nature, I suppose.

For a Luis Buñuel's movie, it is needless to mention how the direction is. You will find some breath breaking cinema shots with his awesome cameraworks. Sounds pretty much holds the pace where it needs to be. And we can witness some beautiful songs which are even performed and sung by the cast.

This is a must watch movie for Arthouse fans and this will be an utterly grateful movie experience.
