Review of Videodrome (1983) by Phillip H — 07 Aug 2010
Arguably Cronenberg at his finest hour, Videodrome is a mindfuck & a half. James Woods plays Max, a tasteless TV executive hoping to up his ratings by getting a fix on new sleazy material for his station.
His call is answered in the form of Videodrome, a mysterious ultra-violent pirate broadcast of snuff. Soon afterwards he meets up with shady individuals in hopes of finding the source of Videodrome, but becomes convinced of a conspiracy & begins having difficulty separating his horrific hallucinations from reality.
Definitely the most inventive, erotic, gory & surreal movie of Cronenberg's career with an important underlying message of modern corporate media's perverse effect on the human psyche. For full optimal effect & understanding, it should be viewed while sober.
Drinking or any substance abuse is likely to mess with your head more than Max pulling a gun out of a gaping hole in his stomach or sticking his head into a pulsating TV screen.
