3: Pictures don't get much stranger than this, but, after all, it is Cronenberg. I'm very pleased he has, for the most part, left his rather gross prosthetics behind in the 1980's (eXistenZ being a notable exception, as perhaps is the bar scene in A History of Violence).
I'd say I prefer his more recent and more commercial fare, such as A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and Spider, but Videodrome has a certain perverse appeal. Just as the creators of Videodrome within the film have a political philosophy, Cronenberg and company seem to have a bone to pick with mass-produced media, particularly when it comes in the form of television broadcasts, but determining exactly what is going on and precisely what the message is is not a simple matter.
No one said films had to be easy, but the complexity of the message here does not lend itself to easy consumption.
