Review of Videodrome (1983) by Ravikiran A — 09 Jun 2009
From a personal viewpoint, I would probably consider this Cronenberg's most fuckedup movie (and I say that in a helluva positive way). This movie, being a horror/scifi sociopolitical satire is considered one of the classic mindfuck movies of all time. For a good reason.
The movie looks critically at the role of television in a social context, and the issues of sex and violence in the mass media, which is still a hotly debated topic. And then there is the exploration of the concept of reality and illusions. And all this woven into a scifi-ish story.
I guess the special effects are outdated, but I doubt that is hardly the point of the movie. The horror is not because of the gore or the disgusting fleshy masses. The horror is the realization of the central theme of the movie.. That we are, indeed craving satisfaction of the primal and most basic urges.. sex and violence.
