VIDEODROME is a sharp blend of social commentary and the "body transformation" subgenre. Director David Cronenberg is a master of intellectual horror, horror that affects because of both its ideas and its imagery, and this film is a great example of that.

It's primarily (to my mind) something of a dark satire on how we as a culture consume - and are consumed by - our media, and that's an idea that still feels very relevant, despite the vast technological gulf between the early 1980's and today.

The makeup effects are quite impressive and unsettling for their sexualized and diseased/decaying flavor, and Howard Shore's bleak, heavily electronic score sets the mood very well. Does the movie make sense on any sort of realistic level? Not really, but it's metaphorically powerful and resonant, and that's more than I can say for most so-called horror films.
