Review of Vexille (2007) by Benjamin F — 04 May 2008
Like the recent Appleseed films, it's visually spectacular, though there's lots of "uncanny valley" action going on with the human characters, who tend to look like characters out of the Suda 51 produced video games (Killer 7, etc).
It's a much better film than either of the Appleseeds and it explores relevant issues given Japan's standing in terms of technology and robotics. But it treads a lot of already well-worn territory story-wise and theme-wise, while the characters are more generic than dynamic.
I loved Fumihiko Sori's previous film, Ping Pong, and while this film isn't bad, I was hoping it would be better.
