Review of Veronica Mars (2014) by Adilene A — 16 Mar 2014

Being a fan-backer of this project, I suppose in some ways I am biased by how I feel about this belated feature. The excitement that this was going to happen was one thing, but just how the finished result was going to be was anyones guess.

Watching this with my fan-boy cap on, Veronica Mars has mostly aged the way the characters should after almost ten years and the film is a satisfactory investment of some of my hard-earned finances. I think I got what I paid for.

To be brutally honest, the film finds its difficult at times to feel like anything more than a two-part episode. Yes, its kickstarter budget was modest, so its impossible to judge this unfairly on that point. In fact, in other ways, Thomas has done wonders the stretch the budget as best he can to actually pull out some incredible staged sequences - that would look impressive on a TV budget anyway.

I have to say, as a fan, I have a few issues with the narrative decisions; that purely comes across as a fan more than anything to do with the technicality of the film. But I won't spoil anything here for fans who don't want to know.

The other point is that, despite his best intentions, Thomas really hasn't done anything here to make anyone who hasn't watched the series feel like they could grasp this world. For fans, this is an enormous love in, and that is essentially the point; so in that regard its a success. And Thomas has said that's all he cares about anyway, which is fine with this Marshmallow.

The result is a success, in that I feel like I got my money's worth, and that revived films/TV series have fared worse of late (ie Arrested Development) so I am completely and utterly happy with the finished product. No one who wasn't invested in the series at all will not be swayed by this fan-indulgent overlong episode, but who cares what those people think. Long live the Marshmallows!
