Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Luke H — 07 Aug 2011
I sometimes wonder whether Mike Leigh could make run-of-the-mill movie in his movie-making career. How magically/deeply/truly he portrays the lives in his movies is still an enigma.
Speaking about Vera Drake, this is a masterpiece. Not an ounce short of it. Only two diametrical instances: 1) Susan's case. No matter what the law says, then or now, in England or any other part of the world, if you can afford a plane ticket and the medical bill you will always be able to obtain a competent abortion, so laws essentially make it illegal to be poor and seek an abortion. 2) Reg's Christmas speech. He knows telling Vera she has prepared a perfect meal means more to her than any speech about rights and wrongs.
How brutally grand Leigh's cosmos is!
