Review of Vera Drake (2004) by George F — 17 Oct 2004
What an amazing, devastating performance by Imelda Staunton! Each facial expression and body posture is worth at least a thousand lines of dialogue!
This film is moving, and complex in its emotional tapestry. Everything is melded by Imelda and the rest of the cast, all of whom are convincing, and the movie makes you nostalgic for early 1950's London, even if you were never there!
While your reaction to Vera Drake may depend on whether you have strong feelings on one or the other side of the abortion issue, I enjoyed it as a dramatic "period piece" with some amazing acting.
Proactive? Perhaps. Evocative? Definitely. A great story and film? Absolutely!
Precise Knight Rating 8.3.
