Review of Vera Drake (2004) by Steven B — 23 Feb 2007
Wonderful moving social commentary set in the fifties when families were tight knit and loving and caring units and everyone smoked cigs - strange to see this in the year that we are all being forced to give up! Vera is a caring selfless working class woman who cares for her fellow persons especially by helping young women who get into trouble - times before the contraception pill.
Wonderful moving part of Vera played by Imelde Staunton. Worth watching if just for seeing how times have changed whereas the valued family unit has now but disappeared with TV and takeaway meals a poor substitute.
This is a must to see - if only for social history value.
