Review of Vanishing Point (1971) by Akshay S — 25 May 2008
Cult. Vanishing Point is cult and is to an extent beautifully hedonistic. To my mind it is 'the' road movie with only 'Easy Rider' in the same class. A very intelligent movie that has a underlying yet potent whiff of existential thought running right through it.
The concept of the 'marginal man' who neither belongs to one established way of life or the other is intensely thought provoking and eerie. The symbolism of the road, the speed, the blind black RJ, etc all come together to make up the plot with nothing being obvious.
I believe that the story is more about a man than about society. While appreciating the art of the film, I have to admit this movie is 'far-out'. Between the orgasmic purring of the white challenger and the good musical score, I was seriously tripping on this flick.
The wide open road beckons. Watch this one.
