Review of Vanishing Point (1971) by Broken H — 29 Jul 2008
Vanishing Point is one of those cult films that have gone onto inspire a lot of other car chase films, but is a film that in my opinion is lacking in many ways...
There is of course the muddled handling of the story-for example, why is this former policeman, vetran and now pseudo hipster racing across the country to deliver a car in lightning time? simply to win some uppers?? there are some good car chases, sure, and who doesn't like to see some dinosaur dodge chases?
Perhaps the worst element of this film is the blind "superSoul" dj who has some sort of telekinetic connection with the driver. For starters, when did blind guys start wearing wristwatches? but what the hell does this character have do to do with anything? Is he simply the voice of a generation, speaking in pure funk hipster, and trying to spin some lame ass songs in a dusty vacant western town that somehow can afford to broadcast their signal across 3 states???
I found with all these questions nagging me that I was not into the movie at all for the most part. Classic my ass.
