Review of Vanishing Point (1971) by Mark N — 09 Apr 2012
"Greetings, sir. Let's race!" haha Ok, I'll be honest. I decided to watch this movie because Quentin Tarantino told me to. Seriously, he did...indirectly. If you are a Tarantino fan, then you know one of his strongpoints is his dialogue.
Well, in Death Proof, there's a scene where the girls start talking about John Hughes movies. This conversation evolves into "what are the best car/car chase movies." In their opinion, Vanishing Point is the "coup de grace" (they also mentioned Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry and White Line Fever, so don't be surprised if I end up watching those too).
There's also more than a dozen references to this movie in Death Proof (some are quite subtle), so I guess in that respect, both movies have a lot of replay value. Anywaaays, sorry to get off topic like that, but I love Tarantino, and his suggestions.
It's pretty entertaining, considering there's not much of a plot, there's never a dull moment, and it's more than 40 years old. It's quite possibly THE car chase movie, definitely giving Bullitt a run for it's money.
The whole movie is one big chase. And if anybody tries to compare this classic to The Fast And The Furious, I prolly won't talk to them. Unlike TFATF, this isn't fake: real cars, real locations, real engines (damn, I need a better sound system haha), real characters, real acting, and last but not least NO CGI! Random thought, this guy, Barry Newman, reminded me of a young Gene Wilder.
So yeah, a cool cult flick. I approve.
