Refn's ambition is well noted, and that may come at the expense of the viewer's awareness. If you're patient, like One-Eye himself, you'll be haunted by strikingly violent imagery and the brutal reality of the price of religious pursuits.
If you're looking for a plot guided journey void of portent and symbolism...look away.
