Review of Valhalla Rising (2009) by Gary H — 14 Apr 2016
A poetically dark and beautiful film, Valhalla Rising conjures magic from its sheer starkness and silence. I find most modern films to be full of needless, self-serving dialogue that comes off as smarmy and trite. This film does away with modern film convention and goes back to the basis of what a film should be - a purely visual spectacle. This is a moving painting that assumes a certain intelligence in the viewer, in that some interpretation is left to the individual. The brutal silence is a voice of its own, while the exquisite pacing keep the tension and the story drawn tight.
This film will find its audience in a select group of viewers that enjoy the artistry of film and in dissecting the multilayered, timeless symbolism.
