Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Joseph K — 08 Aug 2017
Best content and plot this year. This is one of the best and most intelligent films I have seen in a very long time. It's pallet of colors are bright, inventive and state of the art of visual film making. I recommend the 3D version, as it is absolutely a kaleidoscope of movement and action. Fast paced, funny and made going to the theater worthwhile. The movie is political, moral and philosophical. Adult sci-fi with erotic elements and brilliant artistic environments as well as beings. Exemplary and imaginative textures and graphics.
So this movie is being sandbagged by corporate conservative critics and reviews. The plot deals with how State "security" can be used to facilitate genocide. Robots will follow orders, people question State motives and refuse to acquiesce to demand made by authority. The State lies to cover up it's crimes against humanity. One might start to realize why American audiences (and employee critics) might be highly uncomfortable with the subject matter. Think Israel. Think the illegal invasion of Iraq under entirely manufactured pretenses. Think the 100 year long American genocide and theft of an entire Continent. You don't have to be scholar to figure out why the reviews are 50/50. That is how politically at war with it's self the U.S. population is. The movie is spectacularly uplifting, if you care about the Reble Alliance defeating the Empire in Star Wars movies. It bears mentioning that this movie probably doesn't devalue or hate strong young women enough for fox news watchers tastes. The female lead isn't doe eyed, act demure, and doesn't try to be sexy. She is all business. Another strike against this movie is the male lead is criticised for his patriarchal condescension towards women who he primarily veiws as things he can masturbate his ego on. Oh Hollywood is going to orchestrate some backlash against that kind of sentiment. Personally any Luc Bason or Ridley Scott SciFi film is masterful, in my opinion. They are living legends along with Del Toro and Peter Jackson.
So ignore critical reviews and have faith in the power of art to criticize the powerful. The 'flop' is being engineered against what is an entirely French production. If you believe in social justice and evil elites being exposed and punished this film was made to entertain you. It doesn't try to please as many people as possible. I applaud what it communicates while being engrossingly entertaining with eye candy I wish my video games possessed. There is a screamingly funny scene with ethan hawk as a bordello enthusiast. But once again US corporate news and media strike back.
