Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Jessica D — 30 Dec 2018
One of the worst sci fi movies I have ever seen (and my husband actually agrees with me). First this shows Hollywood's unhealthy obsession with youth, first demonstrated by attempting sexual tension between characters that look 16 in the first scene.
Yes I know Dane Dehaan was 31 when he made this film, but I didn't know that watching it. I seriously thought they were teenagers. Where the movie was suppose to bring in the audience and connect them with the romantic characters through some weird early nostalgia for young love, just made you sick to your stomach and awkwardly guilty for even watching it.
Doesn't help the actors do not portray the emotional sentiment experienced during young/new love. Instead they dismiss the relatable emotions and instead offer a character who is so self assured, pompous and kind of sexist that he just becomes a characachure of what teenagers think love and marriage looks like (only emphasizing his lack of real maturity).
Hey kid you don't really get to be that kind of douche until you get well into college ok? And a major??? There is nothing that makes me think this kid is exceptional in anyway. Prodigy or not, not believable.
Oh the same goes for Cara Delevingne the 25 year old model. Too young and inexperienced to really embody the maturity of the movie try's to push on her. Give me Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich any day.
At least they can portray both the strength of hero characters and the vulnerability of new love. Oh and they look like they are old enough to drink.
