Review of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) by Maksim B — 10 Jan 2018
A polarizing delivery, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, is as dazzling visually as disappointing content-wise. A mixture of a mesmerizingly beautiful visual concept and a chaotic story, this long expected Luc Besson movie has what it takes to bring a mildly satisfying theater entertainment, but fails way short of satisfying the more pretentious sci-fi fans.
Based on the legendary and inspiration comic book series, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets offers a wild intergalactic ride, countless of intriguing and most curious creatures and loads of a-la Luc Besson visual concepts. Coupled with the young duo Dane Dehaan (Valerian) and Cara Delevingne (Laureline), this space odyssey tries to be funny, action-packed and entertaining. While it mostly succeeds due to the above-mentioned qualities, the story ultimately fails to match the high expectations set by the fact that this delivery is by the director of the cult Fifth Element. The story is unevenly paced, at moments taking too much time to develop and to explain the complexity of the world introduced to the viewers. On top of that the level of predictability is disappointingly low and that directly reflects on the Valerian's ability to engage and to emotionally compel the audience.
In conclusion, Luc Besson's latest sci-fi could be considered a flop if compared to his The Fifth Element. Watchable and mildly funny, you will potentially be satisfied if you lower your expectations and do not look for a meaningful story and great acting. Just sit back and enjoy the visuals and the action.
