Review of Vacation (2015) by Fong K — 11 Dec 2015
The original National Lampoon's Vacation has always been my all-time favorite comedy. It's a hilarious, classic movie because Chevy Chase is a naturally funny person. Unfortunately, this new installment is everything that the first film wasn't.
This is basically a poorly made rehash that relies on the same crude, vulgar material that is seen in most of today's brainless comedies. Like every other movie he's in, Ed Helms is playing the same character we've seen countless times before.
He tries to channel classic Chevy Chase moments, but it doesn't work because he's not funny at all. Rarely do I sit down to watch a movie labeled as a comedy and not laugh once, but that happened here.
The only reason I'm rating it one star is for some brief flashback moments that reminded me of a better film. I really hated this movie. It makes Vegas Vacation look like a masterpiece.
