Strongly held my involvement like a 9- or 10-rated movie up to the critical moment at which the scale of the situation is radically expanded. From that point onward it has too many dots to connect, and the last few minutes of explanation stretch your willing indulgence beyond the breaking point.
In my opinion it would have worked better if it had been kept frankly at the level of horrific moral metaphor. That's what it feels like it started out as anyway, with the big reveal grafted on, rather than flowing naturally out of the premise.
