Review of Up the Yangtze (2007) by Corey C — 25 Jul 2008
Director Yung Chang masterfully captures the deeply intimate details of individual lives uprooted by the behemoth baby of the Chinese government (Three Gorges Dam project). Rather than focusing on the political, environmental, or economic aspects of the epic project, Chang hones in on the most personal, emotional details of the lives of two teenagers to deliver the story.
The result is a remarkable and devastating documentary that rips through the veneer presented to the rest of the world to reveal the very real and heart-wrenching impact on individuals and families.
