Review of Unplanned (2019) by Criticalview — 31 Mar 2019
Unplanned tells the biography of Abby Johnson, a clinic director at Planned Parenthood who left because of what she saw. I expected this to be a “made for TV” class hit piece that glorified the pro-life movement. Instead, this movie remained very true to the facts and included events both positive and negative to both sides. The production values are not exceptional but, considering the budget, the results are commendable. The move does show Planned Parenthood in a fairly bad light. Unfortunately, it is an accurate one. The facts are all well documented from multiple sources and can be easily verified. Knowing that, this story becomes very compelling and convicting. I’m surprised by some of the negative comments from other “professional” reviewers on this site. Owen Gleiberman claims “at certain points twisting "facts" into a narrative of conspiracy” this is simply not true. I expected this type of narrative but was surprised to find it wasn’t there. The facts, including the ones that have conspiratorial implications, are well and clearly documented. I was happily surprised to find minimal spin. Perhaps Gleiberman has taken a more biased view than he admits.
Vadim Risov states the movie is “parable traced over a Chick track”. I must agree with the soundtrack being very chick flick in style but this isn’t a parable. It is a surprisingly accurate portrayal of well-documented events. I’m saddened that the reviews are not as accurate as the movie. Seems like there really is an agenda with the “professional” reviews that wish to obfuscate the truth.
