Review of Under the Volcano (1984) by Jaye G — 09 Jan 2009
A mesmarizing yet sickening portrayal of an alcoholic by Albert Finney. The ending is foreseeable which makes the anticipation that much more unbearable. Firmin's social network isn't so much breaking down (that went down a while back), it's being taken out back and shot; social suicide in sorts.
Huston refuses to let up on the alcoholism, when your main character can't go 5 mins without liquor (and downs it like water at that) because his shakes start-up it's hard to tell when his past the point of no return, then again he probably crossed that line some time ago so what's it matter?
