Review of Under the Sand (2001) by Michael L — 06 Sep 2008
Beautiful and sensual and mysterious, this in my opinion is Francois Ozon's best and most mature film. Charlotte Rampling is luminous and holds the entire film together with a mesmerising, resolute performance; her denial at her husband's death is initially peculiar but also evidence of a fierce, enduring love (at least from her POV).
Quite surreal at times and it never gives us easy answers, but it's so cool and elegant and assured, and Rampling is so perfect you can't tear your eyes away from her.
