Review of Under the Sand (2001) by Charles G — 22 Jan 2009
A very weighty drama that is refreshingly subtle while still aligning itself with an art film aesthetic. The technicals are all sound and Rampling is superb in the lead role, but I did struggle to believe her plight at times and found the film somwhat contrived.
There was just something in how the character was positioned in every aspect aside from her husband that just made it hard to believe that is how she would react to his death. I couldn't help but be reminded of Nanni Moretti's superior The Son's Room.
