Review of Under the Sand (2001) by Doctor S — 04 Jan 2010
Charlotte Rampling is exceptional as a woman trying to cope with the mysterious disappearnace of her husband on a beach. She doesn't descend into violent histrionics, she simply goes into denial over the whole thing.
The film never puts a step wrong and remains a wonderful character study, the only problem for me was that it drew a couple comparisons to "Three Colours: Blue" which is one of my all-time favourites.
The lead performance doesn't hoist a lifeless story onto its shoulder and run with it, it is merely the centrepiece of a near flawlessly presented dinner table with plenty of fine themes to digest.
