Review of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) by Joseph T — 10 Oct 2011
Perhaps this film is simply too much for me, as I just don't get it. The imagery, while beautiful and dream-like, feels weird and most of the time depressingly boring. The plot twists from one bizarre thing to another, and rarely are any of them mentioned again.
And while the past lives of Boonmee (Thanapat Saisaymar) are examined, they feel detached from the rest of the film. In some cases you're not even sure, which one of the characters in the flashback is supposed to be Boonmee.
And seriously, sex with a catfish? A monkey ghost for a son? Who wrote this script? So yeah, while I'm sure that this film is very artistic and that it deserves its praise, it's just not my personal cup of tea.
I get nothing from it.
