Review of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) by Mark T — 21 Apr 2011
She said: Ghosts are attached to people, to the living. So he asked: Then what will happen if they are dead? The living keep living in the colorful, secular present, leaving part of themselves lingering in the moment when they thought of the dead and the past.
A very profound but extremely slow movie. Portrays a group of outsiders: Uncle Boonmee whose former life is born after a princess and a catfish; Huay, his wife, who becomes a ghost after death; his son who tranforms into Monkey Ghost years ago; Jen who doesn't belong to the countryside; and Tong who suddenly becomes a monk after Uncle Boonmee's death. Maybe in the face of death, all men are outsiders in this secular world of the living.
