Review of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) by Marina M — 28 Sep 2013
This is a difficult film to review, because I'm not sure what I just finished watching. I wasn't sure at first if there was a language barrier or a cultural barrier preventing me from understanding what was going on, but I soon realized that neither were the case.
Clearly an experimental film, this movie is all about interpretation in symbolism with very little plot. Once the scene was set that a man in a remote Thai village was terminally ill, there was little left to comprehend.
The film contains long takes of nature and scenery, most of which is beautifully shot. The movie moves from scene to scene in a stream of consciousness fashion . Definitely not a movie for the average person.
If you'd like to watch a true avant-garde work, take a look at this one. Probably the most experimental work I have seen to date.
