Review of Un Chien Andalou (1929) by Robert O — 17 Feb 2008
Captures the mysterious logic of the dream state better than any other piece of film I've ever seen. Hypnotic and horrifying, and funny as well. Not only are the images on their own unforgettable--the eye being slit, the severed hand and the hand with ants, the donkey in the piano, and on and on--but the progression from the one to the next makes absolute sense in spite of being, perhaps, nonsense.
A beautiful film from Dali, who maybe should have gone into movies instead of painting, and Bunuel, who is really the only man capable of executing such a wondrous, bizarre feat.
