Review of Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie (2010) by Marq J — 04 Sep 2011
The movie is as basic as it gets and that is it's biggest weakness. The 40K universe almost prides itself on being epic. Battles are often fought with the fate of planets and or systems in the balance, and marines are often portrayed as greek gods warring against the worst of evils.
The movie however tells a squad tale on the characters journey for a search and rescue and their engagement with the Chaos forces. Basic, as stated. The animation would have turned heads during the mid to late 90's however it is clearly outdated.
The plot runs over an hour wich gives the movie a direct to tv special feel rather than a movie. Again basic. The true plus in the movie is its voice acting, but the plot and script don't allow for anything.
The settings are quasi gothic and dark but don't properly allow the viewer to see get the sense of feel of the 40K universe. I would say the movie would be best used as a pilot for the SciFi network or as a collaborative University student film at a high end art and technical institute of some sort.
The movie is ultimately a short story told in movie form rather than an epic war tale featuring the Ultramarines who come off as a generic chapter in a generic science fantasy universe.
