Review of U Turn (1997) by Trailesque — 25 Mar 2018
This film's biggest problem is that it is not sure what it wants to be - a dark comedy or a treacherous neo-noir? It starts out like the first and finishes like the second, and it is an exciting ride.
This also has the evil town motif in it. The stellar cast are all fun to watch, and (I think) this was the first big movie that John Ridley was involved in. No one plays a snarky, dirt-bag loser better than Sean Penn.
The story involves a low level gangster, on his way to deliver some cash, who gets stuck in a small Arizona town when his car breaks down. He begins having encounters with the locals - a corrupt businessman and his alluring young wife, a blind old Indian who spouts cynical wisdom, a slippery gas station owner, and a silly teenager who gets a sudden crush on him (and her violent boyfriend.
) I liked the direction (lots of weird insert shots), the music, the plot twists, the energy - it is an underappreciated flick.
