Review of Turtles Can Fly (2004) by James J — 13 Jun 2010
Children and war. Not at all an easy subject. But this is by no means an easy film. Lots of layers, lots of symbolism. The cinematography is top-notch and there are some really powerful moments littered throughout, but overall I'd say that this is a film whose sum is greater than its parts.
And that's because of the subject matter, which director Bahman Ghobadi tackles with deftness, both delicate and heartbreaking. It's not a movie that you'll enjoy while you watch it. But it is one that will open your eyes, and you won't like what you see.
