Review of Turtles Can Fly (2004) by Emy R — 18 Feb 2011
A film in Kurdish, with the main cast dominated by children, "Turtles Can Fly" is a sombre look at life at the end of Saddam's rule, and the beginning of the American invasion. With young children running the trade and food supply of a refugee town, it touches into your heart. However, from another angle the desperation and the haste in which these children have to face harsh reality is terrifying.
There were a few points that distracted me while watching this. I'm not sure why the main character shouted the entire time, and also why so much of the dialogue was un-translated into the subtitles. Despite these issues, the film was well-filmed, and brilliantly acted. I have no idea how they got the young actors to do what they did. A little more explanation would have helped at times when you weren't quite sure how life happened.
7/10.
