Review of Turbo Kid (2015) by Word P — 07 Sep 2015
Over the past decade I have to admit it has been a guilty pleasure of mine to watch the teenage Canadian drama Degrassi, so whenever I see an actor that was a regular on that show ever appear in a movie I'm usually curious to see how they fair on the silver screen, so when I saw Munroe Chambers was attached to Turbo Kid I was interested to see how it would turn out.
I had no idea what to expect, from what I could tell it was a low budget indy that I hadn't seen a trailer for, but the poster I had found looked campy but very promising.
The cinematography is horrible and the DP should be shot (if there even was one), but the movie overall is interesting to say the least. I love the story which is the most original and unorthodox hero origin story I have ever seen, I would even say this the Napoleon Dynamite of superhero movies.
The action was ameteurish but entertaining enough and the director didn't shy away from the gore, so if you love bloody fight sequences, this one is for you.
What I didn't understand is why the film was so low budget. When the movie opens and shows all the companies that contributed to the making of this film, there was over twelve of them that had special intros leading into the opening credits.
I found my self thinking if they did this on a budget of $10,000 and under, then this film is pretty impressive, but I feel it was more around $500,000 and then I felt more like "that's the best you can do and where did the money go.".
I love watching Michael Ironside in anything ever since I saw him in Starship Troopers and Munroe Chambers was great on Degrassi but I'm pretty sure you didn't break the bank trying to pay their fee or that they pitched in nothing and just took alot of the credit.
It's not the greatest movie of all time but it is a creative take on the superhero genre, if you have some time to kill it's worth checking out.
