Review of Turbo Kid (2015) by Andrew M — 13 Sep 2015
I've seen a few reviews about this being Mad Max on a budget, and I can kind of see that, but throw in a lot of Tank Girl, and a touch of Mega Man. Set in the far off, post apocalyptic year of 1997, our hero the kid finds a superhero suit, puts it on, and hops on his bike to save his android girlfriend from the overlord (Michael Ironside) who controls the water supply.
Simply put, this is pastiche of cheap, cheesy 80s action and gore B movies, and I couldn't help but love it. While certainly done on a budget, the actors are having fun, especially Laurence Laboeuf (no relation to Shia) as the android, and I think Ironside has the over-the-top villain locked up (well, except maybe for Jeremy Irons).
Will everyone love this? No, this is a niche film. If you're in that niche, though, check this out when you get a chance. It's well worth a look.
