Review of Turbo Kid (2015) by Ian B — 11 Feb 2018
I'm the idiot who thought because the movie was called Turbo Kid, it was a kids movie. Wrong. Very, very wrong. And that idiocy has deprived me of one of the great low budget gems of the decade. Turbo Kid is a tough movie to sell.
It's a post-apocalyptic, ultra-gory, no budget, 80's nostalgia flick with a ton of heart. Imagine if Troma films ever tried to cross Mad Max with Mega Man. And if you don't know who Troma films are.
..well, this movie probably isn't for you. The story is simple, the acting is passible, the effects are low-tech, and the entire thing was basically filmed in a quarry. None of that really matters though, because Turbo Kid is filled with more energy, originality and heart than most Hollywood blockbusters.
Not everyone will 'get it', but for those who do, Turbo Kid will quickly become a new favourite. It's visually impressive, the synthwave score by Le Matos is dynamite, and Laurence Leboeuf's Apple is one of the most enjoyably bonkers performances I've seen in ages.
Turbo Kid is proof positive that with the right group of people you can make a better movie with a few thousand dollars than a few million.
