Review of Turbo Kid (2015) by Jeffrey S — 16 Sep 2015
There's a lot more heart to this movie than the 80's steeped trailer would have you believe. Although that 80's styled synth soundtrack would say otherwise.
This is kind of an odd movie to place actually. On the one hand it's cheap, low key, slow at parts, and reminiscent of a Canadian romance movie (think Scott Pilgrim).
On the other hand there's super amounts of over the top violence and genuinely funny moments parodying post apocalypse and 80's movies. Such as high speed chases but everyone is using bicycles, or fashioning a weapon out of a lawn gnome. The plot is kind of a fusion of the concept of Green Lantern meeting Mad Max.
I think what makes/ breaks the movie are the actors who are pretty decent for the most part. Micheal Ironside is the villain and he really chews the scenery for great effect.
The actress who plays the heroine Apple plays a sort of almost ADD extremely cheerful character, who can either add on to the charm of the movie or really annoy the hell out of you depending on what you think of those kind of quirky characters.
So I definitely enjoyed the movie and thought it was fun, however I can see that this is not a movie everyone is going to enjoy universally. Yet if you're bored of the current offerings at your local theater, why not take a chance on Turbo Kid?
