Review of Turbo (2013) by Oscar J M — 10 Feb 2014
The racing set-pieces are fizzy enough, but you have to wonder if teaching snails not to be content with their given snail speed is the right message to put out there. It started off really funny, the gags simple and almost original but then it becomes hit and mess, almost repeating the joke.
At least in Pixar's "Cars" it had a message and wasn't always about speed, this is pretty predictable. The voice acting is good but loses out mostly on the script with boring dialog that could've been so much better.
If anything I'd start the film with the final 3rd as the racing scenes are the best thing here. Normally with animation films like this, you care about the characters but you won't here. After the originality of the hero, the filmmakers borrow too heavily from other movies; the similarities to "Ratatouille" and "Cars" are almost distracting.
Great idea but wasted with a weak script and bad dialog. Some scenes are great but I can't help but think that I've seen this sort of thing before. Shame.
