Review of Tully (2018) by Rebecca31 — 12 May 2018
Marlo (Charlize Theron), now a mother of three is given the gift of a night nanny (yeah I've never heard of it either) by her brother Craig (Mark Duplass). Marlo is suffering from sleep deprivation and the stresses of raising three kids, including a newborn so although first reluctant to accept the help of a night nanny she surprises herself by forming a unique bond with the young free-spirited night nanny, Tully (Mackenzie Davis).
The script is simple, funny and very well executed. Tully is extremely immersive film with lots of heart and gives us a raw insight into motherhood. Theron's performance is stunning I quickly forgot I was watching a film. Every scene feels incredibly real, and this is only reinforced by the chemistry between Theron and Davis. When you get the casting right and you've got a good story the rest should just fall into place. Recommended, but be warned that if the thought of having kids already terrifies you then Tully does not do a whole lot to help those fears.
