Review of Treasure Planet (2002) by David Y — 15 Jun 2009
The story of Treasure Island is a good one, but the execution of setting it in space is clumsy at best. There's a great story here that's eager to be told but it gets bogged down from trying too hard in convincing the viewers of this world of aliens and solar sails, while completely ignoring the fact that they can breathe in space.
Even with poorly designed alien pirates and awkward cat and dog romances, the two leads of Jim Hawkins and John Silver are thankfully on the mark.
Treasure Planet didn't deserve to be the flop it was in the theaters, but it also deserves to be a better film, especially when coming from the team that delivered The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and the smaller gem of The Great Mouse Detective.
Despite what I consider to be flaws, Treasure Planet is still entertaining and certainly more watchable than Titan A.E. But then again, almost anything is more watchable than that one.
