Review of Treasure Planet (2002) by Ricky D — 14 Jun 2018
My favorite movie growing up.
This is a masterpiece and it's seen as Disney biggest flop.
This was a project created by the legendary duo: Ron Clements and John Musker. They worked on Aladdin, Mouse detectives, Hercules and many more. Disney wanted Ron John to work on those movies first and didn't give allowance to release their project. After they made Hercules they were finally allowed to release the movie, so it did. Disney lost 70 million dollars at the box office. This movie was made with deep canvas, CGI and 2D art, revolutionary at the time and how the story was told was unorthodox too.
This movie had the most impressive visuals ever seen in any Disney movies, the character development was out of this world. Every character had its own depth. Throughout the movie, you see how 'Jim' (our Protagonist) develops as a character. He lost his father at a young age and he became kind of a rebel. At the start you see him wearing black clothes and throughout the movie these colors change to lighter tints and eventually at the end he wears full-on white. The villain in the movie has such a big impact on the different moods, you can't help but have a love-hate relationship with the character.
The story in many ways is too impressive for young children to understand but teenagers would be around the right age. Young kids will enjoy the action, the funny characters and the visuals overall but to fully enjoy it, you need to be immersed in the story and enjoy it to it's full potential. Now, why would it fail so much if it was such a good movie? I blame marketing, they right on spoiled the movie through trailers, they released the movie against Harry Potter and The Santa Clause 2, bad decision. Marketing was overall bad and people bought it on DVD instead. It's my favourite Disney movie, a hidden Gem. SEE THIS MOVIE, IT'S AMAZING.
