Review of Touch of Evil (1958) by Jose P — 08 Feb 2008
HOLY SHIT! And here I was thinking that L.A. Confidential and Se7en were great because of the original shooting style and the phenomenal ambience, when good ol' Orson Welles did it twice as good back in 1958! This film puts to shame EVERY noir film ever made.
From the extraordinary cinematography to the phenomenal acting, and the way that the editing keeps knows exactly how fast your heart is beating and knows just when to cut so that it all feels completely organic.
..I need to get more Orson Welles in my life. Like, right fucking now. Citizen Kane was unbelievable, yes, but this is far more accessible and entertaining (and I dare say the acting's a bit better too).
Highly recommended.
