As a portrayal of actual events there were no doubt limitations on where this moive could go. consequently I think that's why the acting is a bit dry and the characters aren't really developed.

however the battle scenes are amazing. made in a time before CGI the battle scenes are nothing less than spectacular! the aerial shots of the japanese fighters approaching hawaii and the subsequent attack rank right up there with the helicopter attack in apocalypse now!
