Review of Topsy-Turvy (1999) by Matthew S — 24 Dec 2007
Musicals. Lately I've noticed with myself that when I watch a musical I pay attention to the normal stuff - plot, character dialogue, camera work... but when people break into song I don't really listen to the lyrics.
I'm too swept up in the tune. Maybe when the numbers are over produced the lyrics get lost. Dreamgirls was like that. Gilbert and Sullivan musicals don't force you to listen to the lyrics but you should.
The lyrics in this one in particular reminded me of Dr. Seuss. Topsy Turvy accomplishes several things: pitch perfect historical settings and performances, great singing, set design in the movie and set design on stage.
.. this is an ensemble cast movie however and the most fascinating thing for me was how every aspect of mounting a musical production - by professionals - is touched upon - seemlessly. Gilbert's inspiration for the play to contract negotiations with the actors, Sullivan's singing lessons to openning night jitters.
Management has to ask one actress to get on the wagon then look the other way when another actor shoots up. It's very turn of the century British and it's about 'The Theatah!' so I'm not saying the movie is for everyone, but it's the perfect movie on this subject.
