Review of Topsy-Turvy (1999) by Shaun S — 08 Jul 2008
I will admit to a pro Gilbert and Sullivan bias, having heard my parents play The Mikado on vinyl many times when I was a tyke - this music always makes me smile. To be fair, this is unlike any other Mike Leigh film, and it has its flaws.
It is overly long and many story threads are left hanging. However, I find myself watching this film over and over again and enjoying it more with each viewing. It is a terrific look at stage life during this period, as well as a nice behind the scenes portrayal of the creative process of theatre.
Terrific performances all around. Ideally I'd love to see a second DVD with a full version of the production with this cast - it's that good. So, my heart would rate this a four star film, but my brain, having to admit its faults drops it to a high three.
