Review of Topsy-Turvy (1999) by Steve H — 29 Dec 2009
A delightful tale of the creative partnership of Gilbert and Sullivan, with many superb production vinettes--which add a good 30 minutes to the normal run time.
As happens, this composer and lyricist had often stormy relations. As portrayed, each possessed vastly different temperaments, working styles and tastes. That it was, nonetheless, a highly fruitful collaboration, we know well.
The story focuses on a sort of watershed moment in their long creative lives. Sullivan feels they are repeating themselves, and has just plain run dry of ideas--and, wants to work on a "serious" operatic work.
The logjam is finally broken in a surprising way, producing one of their most brilliant, literate, and engaging shows--and re-launching the two into many more solid productive years.
Even if you are not a devoted Savoyard, you will likely enjoy this charming musical journey.
