Review of Top Five (2014) by Steve F — 16 Dec 2014
If Woody Allen was black in 1990, this is a movie he would have made. Top 5 is brimming with talent and potential that never gets fully realized. There are maybe three big laughs, three decent ones, and a handful of smiles - with a lot of filler and stilted dialogue in between.
Top 5 could have used a few more laughs and 20 minutes of editing, especially since there's virtually no plot. The entire film is a container for Chris Rock to remind us - and himself - that he's best as a stand-up comic.
He may have the potential to grow as a filmmaker, but in that time he'll be depriving us of his best talent.
