Review of Top Five (2014) by Raji K — 05 Mar 2016
Chris Rock writes, direct and stars as Andre Allen who is a struggling comedian balancing the pressures of work, marriage and critics in Top Five. Allen is tired of doing comedic movies and wants to be taken seriously, but nobody is up for that.
Allen credits his funny films to being an alcoholic and wants to abandon that part of his life. A New York Times critic (Rosario Dawson) soon follows him around to get the true story behind his addiction, pressures and the big time TV show he will be in about his wedding to his soon fiance (Gabrielle Union).
Top Five has some moments and is almost shot in a documentary like style at times, but is overly ambitious as well. The film features several cameos as well, but overall this is an average film.
